Formulating a Diet Strategy

 By
The Diet Strategy - 4 Part Series

PART I - SUPPLEMENTS
Lets explore the reason people take supplements. There is the need for appetite suppression, the need to prevent ailments such as bloating and fatigue during exercise and in general to achieve weight loss goals. We all know what caffeine is. I will never forget when I was 14 and my mom mentioned that when she was younger coffee made her slim. You have no idea how detrimental that new found piece of information was to me. I drank it cold, I drank it hot and I drank it with every meal possible. I quickly became very thin and my mom pointed out that I looked like a stick figure lying in bed. For my developing body, coffee was very effective. However as I grew it just didn't work anymore, not that I ever got fat I was just obsessed with remaining thin... Eventually I committed to one cup of coffee per day until I stopped drinking it all together. I changed my habits. I have a set work out schedule and eat properly everyday. I found freedom in committing to something that works. For one I did not have to obsess about dieting, I honored my routine and my basic calorie needs so it was no longer an issue. February 2010 will make one year that I have followed the routine of eating sufficiently and exercising at least 4 times a week.

PART II - Healthy use of supplements
If you are using stimulants keep in mind that if it contains caffeine it depletes magnesium and B6 hence the moodiness and headaches if you try to quit. Most supplements have 200mg or more of caffeine. Don't just quit or else you will find yourself eating everything in sight, the reason people complain they regain their weight after taking supplements. What happens when you are taking supplements is that it suppresses your appetite so even though you deplete the vitamins in your body you don't get cravings while you are on stimulants. When you stop taking stimulants, your body starts expressing its natural urges to fill up on what it lacks. You have to change your game plan. You can use two things to level your body out when coming off stimulants. First, move to green tea that has about 50 mg or less of caffeine in order to prevent the headaches and second, have a meal replacement shake in the afternoon each day to help replenish your vitamins and minerals. Most protein shakes contain vitamins that can help by eliminating cravings in two ways; restoring nutrition and making you feel fuller because of the protein component. If stimulants made you power through your workout without feeling the burn, the pain will return when you stop. One alternative to preventing muscle fatigue is MSM. If you don't know what it is then you don't need to use it, lol.

PART III - Milder alternatives to stimulants.
For those who are still trying to lose weight and are on stimulants.

- Mild weight management supplements - Mega T drink mix - 50 gms of caffeine and green tea
- Aqua full water mix - contains 4gms of fiber with 1gm of green tea.
- Kellogs protein/fiber water mix with 5gms of protein and 5 gms of fiber.
- Protein Shake with 20 gms or less of protein - There are protein shakes with 50 gms or more of protein, avoid these especially if you eat a lot of protein.

How to use protein supplements- Have a protein supplement at the end of your work day. This is key. Not only can it help you power through your work out if you go to the gym after work but it will nourish you at the time of day you want to go home and eat a large meal. It is guaranteed to cut the amount you feel you need to eat. A great mini protein shake by muscle milk has only 100 calories, 15 grams of protein and no added sugar. What you should achieve here is you cut how much you eat at the dinner table.

What happens in the 9 to 5 hours before dinner? This is where Kellogs water mix and aqua full or a green tea mix comes in. Work is where we have the largest meal. Something happens at work that makes you feel drained by lunch time. At your desk I suggest a bottle of water mixed with Kellogs protein/fiber mix, mixed and mega t drink mix or a supplement that combines both protein and green tea (aqua full water mix). If you are sipping on this concoction, it will reduce the amount you eat at lunch or it will prevent you from loading up on fatty stuff. Some have suggested having fruit before lunch. That works too even better when combined with green tea.

PART IV - What works for the long term?
Changing your habits. These are just some strategies to help you get there. Ultimately what works for me devoid of supplements is low carb breakfast, almonds snack, low carb lunch and dinner; all meals including variations of beans, fruits and veges and potatoes. On this diet, I lose my need to eat just because a bag of almonds is such an appetite killer. However I had to work my way down to beans, nuts and fruits. This is the diet that works for me without any supplements but with my unpredictable lifestyle where one day I am working a 9 to 5 then another I am on a set for 8 hours without eating, I invest in protein shakes and green tea to keep the edge off so I don't eat massive meals after long work days.
Remember you have to make the best decision for yourself as only you know the part of your lifestyle that is sabotaging your diet. Maybe it is not what you eat for dinner or lunch, maybe its snacking in front of the TV on a weekend. Maybe you don't need a fiber or protein supplement, maybe you need to invest in my foolproof TV snack - sunflower seeds and pomegranates.
Sometimes we don't really need pop corn to watch TV we just feel the need to chew something. I assure you, if liver was the only thing that you had to chew on, in front of the TV, that you would eat it just because in front of the TV you are not looking to be full just to eat mindlessly. Here are some snacks you can try for the mindless chewing. Freeze dried fruit, sunflower seeds, and pomegranates. These snacks are apart of my PMS strategy. If you see me with sunflower, freeze dried fruit, pomegranates, or whipped cream and sugar free jello you know what time it is, lol.

Vitamin B12 Injections

 By
Vitamin B12 injections are an effective and tested cure for patients suffering from a deficiency of the vitamin.

Although there is much dispute vis-à-vis oral supplementation of cobalamin and nasal sprays, these injections are the classical, prescribed and accepted remedies for speedy recovery.

Patients suffering from pernicious anemia are treated with a regular dosage of vitamin B12 injections. This is due to the fact that they are unable to absorb sufficient vitamin B12 from their dietary food sources and therefore require intramuscular injections to aid absorption. Nowadays, there are substitutes in the form of oral supplementation; however physicians generally resort to this classical treatment.

Research findings show ample evidence to reveal that cobalamin injections of 1-2 mg per day can quickly correct deficiencies. It is not apparent whether smaller amounts, such as the 25 mcg or so found in multivitamins, are sufficient to cure deficiencies. Such a claim is substantiated by the fact that although oral supplementation with vitamin B12 is safe, efficient and inexpensive and most multi-vitamin pills contain 100-200 microgram of the cyanocobalamin form of B12, many multivitamins cannot be chewed, which is important for its absorption.

The body's ability to absorb vitamin B12 is reduced with increasing age. Older people are often detected to have a more potent vitamin B12 deficiency, even in cases where they do not suffer from pernicious anaemia.

Moreover, an intake of vitamin B12 from food sources decreases markedly with an increase in age, probably because of a lack of stomach acid. The conventional way of fixing a vitamin B12 deficiency has been through intramuscular injections. Experiments also reveal that vitamin B12 intramuscular injections are useful healers of neurological disorders such as progressive memory loss and lethargy.

To maintain vitamin B12 status, the alternatives to high oral doses of cobalamin (500-1000 micrograms daily) are routine intramuscular injections at a dosage of 1 mg per month. This also helps to lower homocysteine levels in the blood, thereby reducing the probability of heart diseases and strokes.

The utility of vitamin B12 is not restricted to curing deficiencies. Injections can also serve therapeutic purposes. A vitamin B12 injection acts as a stimulant for energizing the body, through cobalamin, which transmits its "anti-stress" elements to the human body. For example a recommended effective cure for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is 6-70mg dose of vitamin B12 intramuscular injection per week for 3 weeks.

How Do Vitamins Affect ADHD?

 By
People need vitamins to grow, especially children. They enable our body to be healthy and will also toughen our minds. But not all people take vitamin supplements, for reasons such as that they are costly or some just do not want to take them. However, people who follow a healthy diet which includes plenty of fruits and vegetables may also develop a healthy body and mind. The same thing goes for people who take vitamins, because fruit and vegetables have vitamins and minerals, which can help people to become healthy and fit. Before anything else, let us first take into consideration the meaning of "vitamin". Vitamin is an organic substance that the body requires in small amount to maintain good health which enables the body to function properly. Vitamins are found in a variety of foods.

Some people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder also known as ADHD use a natural medication for treatments, which includes vitamins. ADHD is commonly diagnosed in childhood but it also detected in people of all ages. It is a result of chemicals in brain malfunctioning. An individual with ADHD may express difficulty in controlling hyperactive and impulsive behavior. There are many ways to aid ADHD, such as; stimulant medication, non-stimulant medication and alternative medication which uses vitamins or nutrition.

Nutrition is important for everyone and people who lack certain minerals such as zinc and magnesium may show symptoms of many conditions including ADHD. Many people who suffer with ADHD would rather not use stimulant medications to manage the symptoms but instead, they manage the symptoms through natural medications. Several vitamins have been identified that is helpful in controlling ADHD and these are omega3, B-complex vitamins, as well as minerals; calcium, magnesium and zinc. Omega 3 supplements are the most important vitamins to take for ADHD. Studies show that it can be effective in treating the condition because they improve brain function and it will positively affect the electrical signals in the brain. B-complex vitamins includes B12, Biotin, Folic acid, B3 (Niacin), B5 (Pantothenic acid), and B6 (Pyridoxine). B6 helps in assisting in the synthesis of neurotransmitters and forming myelin which protects nerves. Calcium supplements and magnesium can help in calming the person with ADHD. Magnesium helps in maintaining muscle and nerve function, helps keep heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong.

It also helps regulate blood sugar levels and promotes normal blood pressure while zinc helps in regulating dopamine signals in the brain. Zinc is an essential mineral that stimulates the activity of enzymes, which are substances that promote biochemical reactions in the body. It also supports a healthy immune system and supports normal growth during childhood and adolescence.

Children with ADHD often suffer from a zinc deficiency and magnesium deficiency. Thus, taking zinc and magnesium supplements can help with the symptoms. Some foods that contain magnesium are green vegetables or nuts and seeds. Signs of zinc deficiency include growth retardation, hair loss, delayed sexual maturation and impotence. Some foods that contain Zinc are; oysters, red meat, poultry and whole grains.

There are also natural supplements for ADHD, which are known as Listol. Listol helps with the symptoms of ADHD. It helps in improving focus, concentration and memory with people suffering from it. Listol contains B6, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, GABA Powder and a huperzine extract.

According to the National Resource Center for ADHD, the usage of mega dose multivitamins can treat ADHD but not all people who use mega dose multivitamins find it to be effective because it can be harmful too. Taking too much B6 can increase the red blood cell level.

ADHD has to be treated from many different angles. Prescription medications, behavioral therapy, diet and nutritional changes, and support groups are all positive treatments. To make sure that a vitamin for people who have ADHD is in the right amount, make sure that they have a balanced and nutritious diet so that the food pyramid is followed. The correct amount of vitamins for ADHD people will affect the behavior and make life easier for everyone.

Main Differences Between Tablet and Chewable Vitamin Supplements

By Sam J Loeb

Originally the vitamin and mineral supplements came in either capsule or tablet form, and that was the only choice. However, as the supplement industry grew rapidly in size, several other options become available, with today's choices now consisting of supplements in liquid, powder, and chewable form, as well as the soft gels and lozenges. Each type of the supplements varies in regards to the level of potency and the rate of absorption.

Some of the main differences seen with the chewable and tablet vitamin supplements include -

Tablet-based Supplements - the everyday capsules or tablets are still the most common and cost-effective on the market due to the low-costs involved in the manufacturing process. Also, a great plus to the tablets is the longer shelf-life and the ability to retain their potency for a longer period of time. Powders, liquids, and soft gels can have a much short usable timeframe. Tablets can come in several different shapes and sizes. Provided that a well-known brand name product is purchased then you are more likely to receive the positive benefits that come with these vitamin and minerals supplements. Tablet supplements can come with some negative points, which often relate to the difficulty in swallowing, although this mostly relates to a younger person or someone not use to taking any form of tablet. Also, the tablets aren't able to vary in dosage as seen with the alternative methods of powders and liquids.

Chewable-based Supplements - a chewable vitamin is often seen to be more costly when compared to a similar supplement in the form of a capsule or tablet. Chewable supplements might feature flavorings or sugar added in, which might not be so desirable for those preferring to avoid these types of ingredients in the diet. By eliminating a need to shallow a solid tablet, the chewable supplements are mostly desirable for the child or person preferring a simple to digest alternative to the tablets.

The best type of vitamin supplement to take often comes down to a person's individual taste and preference. For a typical adult, the solid tablets or capsules are most often seen as the best method to get the right in-take of multivitamins. Alternatively, the chewable tablets often come with fruity flavors so perfect for the child. A child might not like the standard tablets due to the medicine taste, which is often noticeable if the tablet is left in the mouth for too long before swallowing. Also, the chewable tablets often come with the vitamin and mineral ingredients at a lower volume, so not quite as effective for the adult wishing to get the right nutritional in-take.

Anti Aging Vitamins - Use Them to Be Young Forever

By Stephens Paul James

The anti aging vitamins do work wonders on the body by turning back the clock and giving us the boost that is required to rejuvenate our mind and body. The vitamin E is there for you to look after your skin. When age takes its toll on the skin and the skin is dry and sags and discolors - the moisture of the skin is lost and it can be retained by the vitamin E. It is anti oxidant too and hence fights the radicals that form in our day to day life. It also helps in improving the immunity of the body and prevents oxidation. The blood clotting can be reduced by this vitamin - lowering the damage caused on the heart.

The vitamin C is another vitamin that can look after your skin and prevents the wear and tear that is caused by time and other external elements. It helps in producing antioxidants in the body and gives a hand in controlling the damage done by the free radicals that is produced by our day to day exposure to smoking, radiation or pollution. The structure and firmness of the skin is based on collagen and it is produced with the help of vitamin C, which again helps in healing of any common wounds on the skin. The help in cancer prevention and delay in cataract generation is also believed to be done by this wonderful element.

The age makes the bones and muscles weak and even the capillaries around the eye gets weaker. This helps the blood to pool and clot around the eyes giving it a reddish tint or a dark circle. There is another vitamin that takes care of these dark circles or the blood clotting by breaking the clots. You can therefore get some help to fight the dark under eye with the help of this vital nutrient. The vitamin K also helps in maintaining some bone strength and reduces the ossification of the bones. If you need this element in your food then you can look for broccoli or lettuce or spinach that is an enriched source of this vitamin.

There are the B vitamins that do have high anti aging properties that increases the moisture retaining capacity of the skin and helps it to fight against viruses and bacteria that grow on the skin. These also help in fighting heart disease and memory degeneration that happens with age. The good cholesterol is aided by this vitamin and the triglycerides are lowered by them. The high triglyceride leads to lessening the risk of hardening of the walls of the artery. The vitamin A is another nutrient that helps in anti aging activities. The antioxidant can neutralize or stop the free radicals. The sun damage of the skin is looked after and the bone health is another important requirement of old age that is taken care of by this nutrient.

The vitamins that are there can be obtained from our regular food intake and also in form of supplements that are often prescribed by the doctors. The skin and bone health and the heart is always reduced when you cross a particular age and then you need to have some aid to help you from aging more. The people around the world likes to look younger than there age and does no want to loose the ability to work or keep in bed for some ailments. That gives the best reason to take vitamins that help in anti aging and keep on the move with the world around you.
